When A Saint Sins

Title: When A Saint Sins

Bible Book: 1 John 2 : 1-2

Author: Billy E. Dickerson, Jr.

Subject: Christian Sin; Sinful Christian

One of the evidences that demonstrate that someone has genuinely been saved is that they have a Changed Attitude about sin! A genuine believer has a growing hatred for sin -he or she doesn’t want to sin. Note Romans 6:11-12. Why do saints not want to sin and strive not to sin? We shall examine that in our message today.

I. Christians Don’t Want To Sin Because of their Family

Note 1 John 2:1, “My little children”

When a Christian sins it not only adversely affects himself, it also affects others – especially his “Christian family.” No man is an island unto himself! We are influencing others whether we realize it or not.

II. Christians Don’t Want To Sin Because of their Father

Look at 1 John 2:1, “the Father”

Whenever a Christian sins, it also affects his or her heavenly Father. Note Genesis 6:5-6 Sin Grieves the Heart of the Heavenly Father!

III. Christians Don’t Want to Sin Because of their Spiritual Fundamentals

We read in 1 John 2:1, “These things I write to you, so that you may not sin”

Read Psalm 119:11

“Put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh to fulfill its lusts” (Romans 13:14).

IV. Christians Don’t Want to Sin Because They Have Been Forgiven

1 John 1:7

Let’s note what believers in Christ should do when they sin.

A. There Is To Be Conviction (2:1) “if anyone sins”

Read John 16:8, and read Hebrews 12:8.

B. There Is To Be Confession (1:9)

A genuine confession includes Godly sorrow and Godly sorrow leads to repentance. We need to read 2 Corinthians 7:10. Also, note Proverbs 28:13.

C. There Will Be A Cleansing (1:7, 9)
D. There Is To Be Confidence (2:1-2)

1. Confidence In Our Advocate

“One who stands alongside his client” Webster states, “One who pleads the case of another in court” Who is He? “Jesus Christ, the righteous.” Where is He? “with the Father.”

2. Confidence In His Atonement

The Old Testament Mercy Seat spoke of the place where the blood was applied - where the just wrath of God was appeased.

So, let us renounce sin in our actions, and when we fail we must confess, find cleansing in Christ and trust Him to enable to avoid that sin the next time we face temptation. Jesus is the answer!
