Dr. J. Terrell Ruis has served with the Georgia Baptist Convention as Ministry Resource Consultant for Southwest Georgia since August of 1999. Dr. Ruis came to the GBC after serving as Director of Missions for areas in South and East Central Georgia.

During his 10 years of service as DOM, Dr. Ruis led associations in strategy planning and constitution revision. He also led associations to sponsor ministry to Hispanics, resulting in a call to Dr. Jorge Houed as full-time minister. Through Dr. Ruis' leadership, associations established counseling centers related to the Georgia Baptist Health Care System. Dr. Ruis also worked with youth leaders to provide Area Missions Camp for young people. He encouraged mission trips to Germany, Connecticut, and Nicaragua. He participated in mission trips to Nicaragua in 1996, 1998, and 1999. His earlier ministry includes pastoral leadership in churches throughout Georgia. He has been a "mission-minded" pastor since first surrendering to God's call to full-time pastoral service.

Dr. Ruis' commitment to his community is evident by his civic involvement. Over the years he has served as an officer of Lions Club in Pearson, Georgia, been named Outstanding Young Man of America in 1974, and served as Chaplain of Berrien County football team, just to name a few.

A graduate of Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, Dr. Ruis received his Bachelor of Ministry, Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, Texas.

Dr. Ruis has been married to Barbara Ann Spells Ruis for 44 years. They have two sons, Mark Bryan Ruis and William Gregory Ruis.
